Things to Do in Chandigarh & Zirakpur with Family

Chandigarh is one of the easiest cities in India to explore with family. The roads are wide, the sectors are logical, and many of the best sights sit within a few kilometres of each other. Add Zirakpur and Mohali next door, and the tricity offers enough for a full weekend without long drives.

This is an honest guide. We'll tell you what's worth your time, what works with small children, and what to skip in the midday heat. We run two indoor parks in the area, so we'll also be upfront about where those fit in, and where the city's classic outdoor spots are the better choice.

Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, Rose Garden

These three sit close together in the northern sectors, and you can comfortably cover two of them in a morning.

Rock Garden (Sector 1). Nek Chand's sculpture garden is the one place every visitor should see. Over decades, a road inspector quietly built a 40-acre maze of figures, walls and waterfalls from broken bangles, tiles, ceramics and industrial scrap. Kids love the narrow passages, archways and animal figures; adults appreciate the story behind it. Entry is inexpensive, and the garden is open daily from morning until early evening, closing a little earlier in winter. Allow two to three hours.

Honest tips: go early, as it gets crowded by late morning on weekends. Some passages are tight and uneven, so a baby carrier works better than a stroller.

Sukhna Lake (Sector 1). A short walk from the Rock Garden, this man-made lake at the foot of the Shivalik hills is where Chandigarh comes to stroll. Early mornings and sunset are the best times, with joggers, walkers and families along the promenade. Boating is available and is a hit with children. Grab a snack from the stalls and simply sit by the water.

Honest tips: summer afternoons are hot and exposed, so plan for early morning or evening. Weekends are busy, especially around sunset.

Zakir Hussain Rose Garden (Sector 16). One of Asia's largest rose gardens, with well over a thousand varieties of roses across wide lawns. It's an easy, free, open-space visit where kids can run while adults enjoy the flowers. The garden is at its best in late winter and early spring, when the annual Rose Festival is held.

Honest tips: outside the blooming season it's a pleasant park rather than a spectacle. Go in February or March if you can.

Indoor fun in Zirakpur (trampoline, laser tag, VR)

Chandigarh's outdoor sights are wonderful, but not at 2 pm in June, during a monsoon downpour, or on a foggy January afternoon. That's when an indoor plan saves the day, and it's also the time of day when kids most need to burn off energy.

SkyJumper Chandigarh, Oxford Street, Zirakpur. Our Chandigarh park sits on Oxford Street in Zirakpur, a short drive from the city along the Zirakpur side of the tricity. It's a fully air-conditioned space with wall-to-wall trampolines and laser tag, for different ages. Kids can free-jump, play trampoline games or team up for a laser tag battle, while parents either join in or take a break.

SkyJumper Mohali, Airport Road, Sector 118. If you're staying on the Mohali side or heading towards the airport, our Mohali park is the more convenient choice. It's a large park with a trampoline arena, VR games, Hypergrid, Laser War and Laser tag, plus two party rooms and a café. Strictly speaking it's in Mohali rather than Zirakpur, but the two are an easy drive apart.

Which one should you pick? Choose by where you're staying: Zirakpur, the Chandigarh–Ambala road and the Panchkula side suit the Chandigarh park, while Mohali and the airport side suit the Mohali park. Both offer trampolines and laser tag. If VR and newer games like Hypergrid are a priority, check out the Mohali park.

Honest tips: grip socks are compulsory on the trampolines at both parks, and jumpers sign a safety waiver. Children need to be at least 3 to jump. Weekday afternoons are calmest; weekend evenings are busiest. Book online on holidays, and eat a light snack beforehand rather than a full meal.

With kids – what works

Here's what tends to work for families exploring the tricity with children, and what usually doesn't.

What works

  • Outdoors early, indoors in the afternoon. Do the Rock Garden or Sukhna Lake in the morning while it's cool, then move indoors when the heat peaks. Kids stay happier and so do you.

  • Pairing nearby spots. Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake are walking distance apart, so one parking stop covers both.

  • Giving kids something active. Toddlers and school-age children don't enjoy a full day of walking and looking. An hour of jumping or a laser tag round resets their mood.

  • Planning around closures and crowds. Weekday mornings at the outdoor sights are noticeably calmer than weekends.

  • Carrying the basics. Water, caps, sunscreen and a change of clothes cover most situations, especially at the lake in summer.

What doesn't

  • Midday outdoor sightseeing from April to June. It's exhausting for adults and miserable for young children.

  • Squeezing in too much. Three or four stops a day is plenty with kids. Leave room for snacks, naps and the unexpected.

  • Strollers at the Rock Garden. The narrow, uneven passages make a carrier more practical.

  • Weekend evenings at the mall with toddlers. The crowds and parking queues can wear everyone out before you've started.

By age: toddlers enjoy the open lawns at the Rose Garden and soft play areas indoors. Kids aged 5 to 12 love the Rock Garden's maze-like paths, boating at Sukhna Lake and trampolines. Teens tend to enjoy laser tag, VR and an evening out at one of the many malls in the Tricity.

Whichever way you plan it, Chandigarh rewards a slow pace. Mix the open-air sights the city is famous for with a few hours of indoor fun, and the whole family will head home happy. Plan your visit to SkyJumper Chandigarh or SkyJumper Mohali to round off the weekend.
